Why are some Tungsten Wedding rings more expensive than others?
So I purchased a new wedding band for my hubby for our Anniversary, and I really wanted to go with Tungsten since its Scratch proof and stuff. I went to several jewelery stores, and almost all tungsten rings are at least $250. I ended up getting a Tungsten Carbide ring for $300. But…a few of my friends found similar Tungsten rings at the mall for $40! I just checked out Ebay, and ALL of the Tungsten rings there are no more than $50! Are jewelry stores trying to rip people off, or are the expensive rings like the one I purchased more special or different?
There is a difference between jewelry Grade and Industrial Grade tungsten. Be careful though and make sure you find one that is jewelry grade and not industrial grade.
Because of the bad economy, many light bulb companies have expanded into creating tungsten jewelry because light bulb filaments are tungsten. They contain cobalt. Cobalt is cheap and is found in industrial grade tungsten. Cobalt reacts to the secretions from your skin and leaves a green or brown mark on your finger.
You want to find tungsten jewelry with a nickel alloy, slightly more expensive but won’t corrode. Usually tungsten jewelry with a name brand is the best way to go. If you are paying less than $100 for a ring, you’re probably getting a light bulb filament.
So the answer is you probably got a real jewelry grade tungsten ring. Your friend bought a light bulb filament from ebay. You will notice that places that sell those light bulb filament rings probably have no warranty.
Give the cheap rings 1 year and they will turn cloudy grey and corroded, and the people on ebay won’t replace it.
