Sunscreen Tips – Titanium Dioxide
Titanium dioxide is a natural mineral, with a white or opaque appearance. It comes in two forms: anatase and rutile. Impurities exist in this form, but before use in sunscreens and make-up, it is processed and the impurities are removed. The health risk posed by this mineral is that in studies done on lab rats, overexposure showed a slight increase in lung tumors. In this study, the rats were exposed to dust particles. Furthermore, the conclusion that ingesting the mineral in humans would produce the same results was not indicated. Many more studies show that it does not pose a health risk and it does not have adverse side effects.
What Does Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles Mean?
Nanoparticles measures the size of this mineral, micronizing it into ridiculously small form. Its use in organic sunscreens is to reflect or scattering the harmful rays of the sun. It is also resistant to discoloration under ultraviolet light. Titanium dioxide particles in sunscreens have to be coated with silica or alumina as well, in order to prevent the radicals that can cause skin cancer.
Is Titanium Dioxide in Sunscreen Harmful?
A debate is going on about nanoparticles in sunscreens, primarily asking if its use is safe. Of concern is the tiny size of the particles (smaller than half a human hair). At this minute size, debate rages as to whether the particles can be absorbed into the skin and can penetrate a cell, leading to cell damage. This could in turn cause DNA damage after exposure to sunlight, which could cause skin cancer. However, much more study needs to be done in this area. Many studies of the nanoparticle size in organic sunscreens show that the nanoparticles are not small enough to penetrate the skin.
More research needs to be done, but it does not appear that using titanium dioxide poses a significant health threat. Also, I have done extensive research on chemical sunscreens and the ingredients in those pose a much higher health risk to the human body. I would not choose to use those for myself or my family. A titanium dioxide sunscreen or a zinc oxide sunscreen (or one with a combination of both) is your best bet.
