Pinewood derby car- why did the paint crack?
My son and I were working on his pinewood derby car for cub scouts. He cut it, sanded it and painted it with the primary color- a nice bright blue. He used Testors Model Master Spray enamel, several coats and it looked very nice after letting it dry for a few days.
Then he decided he wanted a stripe on it, so we used masking tape to mark out the stripe and picked up another can of the same brand of enamel spray paint, a bright orange. From the very first coat (which we tried to keep light), the orange pitted and cracked. We’ve tried to cover it up with additional coats of orange, but its not getting much better.
What happened? I put blue spray paint on top of blue spray paint with no problems- why did orange on top of blue go so bad? Could it be temperature, humidity, other? Is one color on top of another color a no-no with enamel paints?
I used to build these long ago.
My guess is a bad lot of orange.
I’d take a test spray of blue against a different piece of wood, done in coats, then get a different can of orange, see if the same thing happens.
Could possibly be that the minerals in the blue react with the minerals in the orange.
Failing that, I’d call the customer service line of the paint manufacturer. 100% chance some chemist there could tell you in 5 minutes, once you find him/her out of whatever departments..because they test that stuff over and over in the approval process.
