Should I pierce my ears with sterilized surgical steel or gold earrings ?

I wear gold earrings only. 14 kt gold and I asked the tattoo shop I’m getting my ears pierced at and they said they only use sterilized surgical steel. Does it have nickel in it ? If it does I cant wear it because I’m allergic to nickel. What should I do ? My mom pierced my ears herself with gold earrings. And I cant wear silver my ears get crusty when I do.

Implant grade surgical steel contains only a very tiny trace of nickel, if any at all. But I have some interesting news for you, the 14 carrot gold you wear probably has more nickel in it. Gold is expensive, and 14 carrot gold isn’t even close to being pure. jewelry makers cut gold with the cheapest metal they can find to lower production costs, 9 times out of 10 that’s going to be nickel.

So if you have no problem with 14 carrot gold, you won’t have any problems with the surgical steel. And if it turns out that you do, you can request that your piercer use titanium. Titanium contains no nickel at all, and it’s pretty common for piercing shops to carry. If your shop doesn’t carry titanium, they can special order it, you’ll just have to wait another week or two.

Are you sure you’re allergic to nickel? If you were you’d most likely have a reaction to 14 carrot gold. What exactly do you experience? You may have just been experiencing a recurring minor infection, or some irritation. Especially with gunned or self piercings, the piercings may never really heal because the aftercare they were given was wrong, and they changed, and keep changing the piercing too soon. The reaction may have also been due to low quality. Low quality jewelry is often porous and that can seriously piss your ears off.

So, summery, Implant grade surgical steel is most likely fine. Hardly anyone will ever have a reaction to it. If, by the off chance you have a reaction, you can get titanium instead. So no worries. Get your piercing.

P.S. this is worth mentioning, silver is bad for everyone. It oxidizes, that can make your piercing really unhappy, plus it can get into your blood stream and that’s not good for you at all.
