I just want a telescope! please help!
?
hello. i would like to purchase a telescope and have been searching the internet for the past two hours looking up the right kind of telescope for what i want to view, and what is in the price budget. im getting very frustrated because i cannot find anything.
im 13 years old and VERY interested in astronomy. i have only once before owned a telescope, and it was a big disappointment. well, it was only a small telescope that you could buy from a toy shop.
i would like a telescope that:
1. is not so big that i cannot move it around
2. is not over £220
3. will allow me to see saturns rings, the bands and moons of jupiter, and the phases of venus.
4. has good aperture
5. is quite clear, and not fuzzy or blurry
6. available to purchase in the uk.
i have a feeling that i am asking for too much here, but i have my fingers crossed that you guys can point me in the right direction. ![]()
thankyou
1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 shouldn’t be a problem (though be careful about some US companies that don’t offer warranties for non-US customers).
It’s point 2 that is going to cause you problems though (though you should still be able to find something but you probably will need to go towards the higher end of that range).
I’d suggest you look for either a dobsonian as big as you can afford and can carry with you (not likely to be a problem with the price range you’ve stated as you won’t be able to afford a really big one).
As for the telescope that disappointed you, if you’ve still got it then it might be possible to make it useful by getting better eyepieces and adding some weight to the mount (a brick or two hung under it should do the job). Most of the really cheap telescopes tend to provide lots of low quality eyepieces and wobbly mounts so if the optics of the tube are OK (which some are) then they can be upgraded.
But of course a larger 4″ or so reflector that is well made (and adjusted, you’ll need to learn how to do that but it shouldn’t be too much of a problem) will still outperform any upgraded junk ‘scope.

The largest gap in the rings is the Cassini Division, which separates the A (outer) and B (inner) rings. The smaller gap within the A ring is the Encke Gap. Pandora, one of Saturns moons, is seen as a minute speck above the A ring at upper left. The Cassini-H… |
