How does a pawnbroker distinguish between a real and a fake diamond?
Pawnbrokers must value jewelry regularly. How do they spot a real diamond from glass or cubic zirconium?
How about diamonds before the invention of a laser?? WHAT EQUIPMENT ON TV???
Pawnbrokers cannot risk breaking expensive cubic zirconium pieces during tests. Pawnbrokers do not run to a jeweler to check. Answer the question posed…
Most pawnbrokers, as well as jewelry professionals use an electronic thermal probe that tests for diamond. These probes distinguish carbon based gems ( which diamonds are ) versus other gems. ( these are the testers that you will see used on tv ) They usually run about $100 and take only a few seconds to test for diamond. This probe would be used after checking the gem for flaws and if the facet edges were worn or scratched by using a jewelers loupe. If the gem was very clean with sharp edges a tester would be used to make sure it wasn’t a good quality diamond or cz. ( and cz is not expensive, btw. A large 12mm cz can be purchased wholesale for $10 or so )
A jewelers loupe is also used to check to make sure that the gem is not Moissanite, a man made carbon based gemstone, and often times another type of electronic probe that is specifically designed to test for Moissanite and synthetic diamonds ( These are also inexpensive and can test in a few seconds ). Before thermal testers, a refractometer, a gemological instrument that measures how light bends in a gem, was used primarily.
Most diamonds are not laser etched as per another response here. Older estate jewelry diamonds would not have been etched, as they did not have laser etchers a hundred years ago.
Adding that the scratch test another responder wrote here is inaccurate. It is a common misnomer that the way to test for diamond is to scratch glass. Many other gemstones, including cz, is harder than glass and will scratch it.
