Teaching Boys to be Men…how? Part I

I am the father of three amazing children; two boys and one girl in the middle. I like to say I have one of each as they are all three completely different. I’ve run into this dilemma on how to raise my sons as men in this day and age. I am quite a young father at age 37 with my oldest being 16 come January 2009. I want my children to grow up in this world not just using every bit of its resources but giving back to society and making a lasting legacy.

Just a little background of myself. I was raised primarily by my mom. My father left my mom early the same year I was born. My mom married two more times during my living at home with the third stepfather being the one I was raised around. She is now on her fourth marriage that seems to be crumbling, as well. I pray God help their marriage.

The third stepfather was as old as my grandfather (who is a whole other story in himself). To make this simple I will call this stepfather, Frank. Frank had a whole different way of thinking when it came to raising children, “They are rarely to be seen and much more less to be heard”. I remember drives in the car wherever we may have been going and he would turn on the radio. My sister (just two of us) would begin talking or singing and Frank would say, “I don’t turn the radio on to hear you talk or sing. I turn it on to listen to the music”. How devastating that can be to a child looking back. He would become very angry with my sister and throw things. Although, I do not recall him ever beating her, but I was not always there.

Frank was a man who was talented in many areas but never showed me any of it. I never knew how to change the oil in a car, or check the fluids in the car, or repair anything around the house, nothing, he absolutely taught me nothing. My mom and Frank divorced around my senior year, I think. Not much fathering from that man. So, back to my dilemma, how to I teach my sons about becoming men when I had no one to show me.

With my oldest turning 16 January 2009 I want his 16th year to be an amazing, memorable year; I want it to be a year when he becomes a man! I have battled this for some time now. I work a regular job that pays me just enough to pay our bills, food, and gas. I recently started working on a home business opportunity that will generate the kind of income that will eventually replace my current job’s income where I can stay at home, work from my computer, marketing online. This business opportunity will allow me to put in the time I would not otherwise have to be with my family and spend my son’s 16th year focusing on him and teaching him what no one taught me…how to become a man. It does require me to work at it but I only put in 2 - 3 hours a day. My goal is to be working from home in a year with this business.

Another big question on me about teaching my son to become a man is, “What do I do during the 16th year?” I feel very compelled to spend his 16th year doing this for his and my benefit. I enjoy the outdoors, such as walking in the woods or trails, riding my bike (not motorcycle), just spending time outside. He is a musician; plays the guitar, sings, loves hanging with his friends, more of an indoors guy. Also, he is cool! Someone I would have thought I would never be able to be friends with when I was his age. I have to figure out that medium between what he enjoys and throw in there what I know and enjoy to teach him life experiences which was never shown me; learning experiences into becoming a man.

I’ve got a little over a month to begin this journey with my son. Something I am excited to begin yet very apprehensive since this is all new to me. I believe we all want our children to grow up making a difference in this world; at least I do. I do not want my children to become those “lost 20 something year olds” who are wandering around this world with no motivation. I fear for our nation when they become involved with our government.

Now, where do I go? How do I begin this expedition with my son? And an expedition because we are on a quest to unravel a treasure that has been lost…How to become a man?
