Hoop earrings are what the name implies, they are a loop of gold or silver which goes all the ways around the ear. Normally found in plain gold, however you can find fancy varieties that have a one yellow and one white gold hoop twister around each other. Some hoop earrings can be set with coloured gemstones or diamonds however they are more commonly set in a half hoop version with a post and butterfly fitting.    

If she doesn’t have her ears pieced then you can always get a pair of clip on earrings. In recent years they have declined in popularity so you are most likely not to have the choice you would with the pieced ear range.

When buying earrings in sterling silver or gold always check to ensure if they hallmarked. Small or lightweight earrings will not carry the full hallmark, as they will not meet the minimum weight required for hallmarking. If brought online some jewellers will deliver them in a clear seal bag for you to view. If you then want to return them you just need to make sure you leave them in the bag.
