How to Take Care of Your Handmade Jewelry
Handmade jewelry are unique pieces that are precious to own. Their designs are usually unique and cannot be found anywhere else. It is important to protect your favorite pieces of jewelry so you can treasure them for a lifetime. If you care for your favorite piece of jewelry appropriately, it can be worn for many years to come.
Taking care of our jewelry is very simple all we need is to know what are the dos and don’ts. First do not store your jewelry in the open air or humidity for extended periods of time. This will cause it to tarnish quickly. To protect your handcrafted necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, store them in an airtight case or jewelry box. In addition to protecting it from tarnishing, the case will keep it from getting scratched. Do not store your jewelry with rubber materials and other metals such as pennies coins, I know many of us do this. Never leave your bracelet in extreme cold or warm temperatures as these adverse conditions affect metal and beads as well. Put your jewelry away in its own area so that it does not get tangled with other pieces of jewelry. Have separate cases for your earrings, bracelets, necklaces and other jewelry. Be careful when using plastic containers as your storage material, not all plastics are good for storing jewelry. Some plastics contain sulfur compounds which causes your jewelry to tarnish faster.
Buy jewelry cleaner to polish your handmade jewelry. You can buy it at jewelry shops or jewelry counters in retail stores. Plain water and light soap can work also. If you are on a tight budget, try an old toothbrush and some toothpaste to clean your bracelets. Clean it a few times a week if you wear it frequently. Always remove your jewelry if you plan on doing any kind of housecleaning chores such as washing dishes, cleaning bathrooms or anything that involves being around harsh cleaners.Touch the surface of metal jewelry as little as possible. Silver and copper jewelry will quickly discolor from the oils, sweat and other impurities on your hands. Do not apply makeup, perfume, or hairspray while wearing your jewelry. Wait for them to dry before putting on your jewelry.
Do not pull, tug, or twist your jewelry, especially by the jewels or pearls. Sterling silver wire is a delicate filament and will stretch and break if subjected to too much stress. Silk, satin, leather and even stainless steel will also stretch. It’s best not to hang your jewelry. Place it inside a pouch or jewelry box instead. Inspect your jewelry from time to time. This way you will be able to tell the condition your jewelry is in. If there are some pieces that are falling apart you will be able to repair or replace them before more damage is done. Take your bracelet to a jewelry maker or someone who creates handmade bracelets should it break by accident. Save all of your beads that you can. Sometimes your bracelet can be restrung back to its original state.
