Whats the best way to remove a background in a photo?

My friend makes jewelry and I offered to take pics for her website. I’m new at this so any advice is great, but the question is.. I hung the earrings on a string of fishing line in front of various backgrounds. Now I’m editing and struggling with how to remove the line from the photo, without messing up the background. I don’t have photoshop, but am using “paint” from paint.net. The program allows layering and many effect options. Iv tried the wand tool, the cloning tool, cut and pasting, but I cant quite get it right. The problem may be the backgrounds, because the aren’t solid colors. Some are Textured, some are slate tiles, some are glossy ceramic tiles. Any tips on the editing or photo shooting/lighting for future efforts would be great. Almost all the jewelry has silver, gold, quartz and other various semi-precious stones. I’ll send an unedited pic to you if you want to see what I’m dealing with.
