Jewelry styles for the Baby Boomer generation
Once past my younger years I didn’t really wear much jewelry. I favored instead long silk scarves that I could drape around my neck, adding color and interest to my outfits but hiding a multitude of sins beneath.
But scarves don’t work with all outfits – and they seem just wrong in the summer months – so I started experimenting with jewelry. I’ve found that the area between the base of the neck and the top of the bust has become a palette upon which I can load a wonderful array of jewels that are things of beauty in their own right. I don’t need to cover up with scarves as people do not look at my less than perfect neckline or matronly bust but at my beautiful necklace.
When I was younger – in my hippy days and beyond – I favored long ropes of beads and chains and this look is even more popular with the young women of today. With the right outfit – a simple shift dress for example, long necklaces can look stunning. But as we get older we look for better quality in our clothes. We know now what styles and colours suit us.
And we demand quality in our jewelry too.
We all have our favourite pieces of gold and silver, perhaps a little pendant of our birthstone or an heirloom locket. But sometimes we need something more, something special to lift our outfits and our spirits!
For most of us expensive gemstone Jewelry, lovely necklaces of precious diamonds, rubies and sapphires, are beyond our reach and anyway – shouldn’t someone else be buying that for us?
