What is the difference in gold jewelry?
Recently I visited a gold pawn shop in the Philippines with a Aussie who was buying an engagement ring. As I watched, the sales girl and he would make quick comments about this or that ring being Russian Gold or Italian Gold or American Gold. I know 14k, 16k, 24k and such about gold but what is the difference in Russian/Italian/American gold? At one point my Aussie companion stated that he didn’t want to look at any Russian gold rings…he talks to much for me to question him so…I’m asking you. What’s the differences and why does it matter? (thanks)
considering that there is only a smaller percentage of pure 24k gold in all those alloys (14K, 18K etc.) it makes sense that there is a difference in the end product. The pure gold percentage is the same, gold is a chemical element, if it’s pure, it’s the same anywhere. The additional metals and their amounts make the difference. You can add more silver/copper etc and still have 14K gold. The 14k relates to the percentage of gold, not specific amount of the other metals. Russian gold is traditionally pinker (more copper in the mix) than other gold. Some people call all rose gold Russian gold.
There is also a difference in quality, depending on the ‘other’ metals in karat gold. For example, you can use Platinum or palladium to make white gold, but you can also use Nickel and Zinc. The end product is very different in color and durability, but they would both be the same 18K white gold as that relates to the amount of gold in the mix. http://www.wedunit.com.au/pages.php?pageid=20
